My little sister's birthday was just the other day, and to celebrate, my Mami and I decided to throw her an enchanted forest themed birthday party! I wanted to make it extra special, so I'd been working on DIY decorations a few months beforehand to make sure everything was just right. Here's what we did to celebrate!
The main project that I'd been working on was a whimsical tree. Mami had thought that it would be a great decoration idea, and I got to work on it as soon as possible. It was a bit tricky, but I eventually got it done. It was made of cardboard and wrapped in craft paper with skewers and paper as branches. I then painted it all and added faux wisteria and some papier mache birds that I'd made...
And some strands of fairy lights made it look good at night too!
Speaking of fairy lights, I also used them to make these fairies in jars!
It was a pretty simple project really. On some stock paper I drew and cut out a fairy silhouette. Then I painted it black, and while it was still wet, I put it inside an old jar so that it stuck to the sides. I cut out some grass in the same way so that it wouldn't look so empty. Using a painting sponge, I dabbed some white paint to the outside of the jar and the lid with some gold paint. After that, all that was left to do was wrap some twine around the top and add a coiled strand of fairy lights to the inside (battery pack taped to the inside of the lid) and I had these nice lanterns!
I also used some old jars for another project. While the fairy light jars were made using pasta sauce jars, I had some others that I upcycled from other uses...potions!
When making these potions, the more oddly shaped the glass the better! The one from maple syrup was my favorite, and I used it to create a bottle of snake venom! Then there was some poison apple juice and a shapeshifting potion. Most of it was just creating the labels; designing them online, printing it out, tearing up and crumpling up the paper to make it look old, and then brushing it with some diluted brown paints!
Perhaps my favorite of these decorations, though, were these dragon eggs!
I couldn't find any instructions to make them that I really liked. They were all really complicated, with a ton of steps and chemicals that did appeal to me. So, I winged it and actually loved the results!
I bought some 6" plastic Easter eggs, scraped them with some sandpaper (so that the glue would actually stick), and used some hot glue to create the texture. I needed quite a bit of glue, and it took some patience, but the results were worth it! And once all that was done, I used a sponge to dab on the base color (darker versions of the color I wanted), let it dry, and came back with some metallic paints!
And with the decorations taken care of, it was time to focus on the menu!
There were cupcakes, and a ton of them in fact! We may have gone a bit overboard :)
There were "toadstool cupcakes" and cupcakes with "moss" on them. It really added to the whimsy feel of the party!
The toadstool cupcakes were the first that Mami made. They had a vanilla base and a sweet strawberry frosting, with some Dandies mini marshmallows for spots.
The "moss" cupcakes had a chocolate base and a minty buttercream. For the actual "moss" part of it, Mami made some extra vanilla cupcake batter (from the toadstool cupcakes), dyed it green, and baked it like a regular cupcake. The crumbs were then used to make the topping.
One of my favorite treats were these dirt and worm cups! Mami made a batch of peanut butter pie and served it in some 4oz mason jars. After that, all she had to do was top it off with some cookie crumbs and a vegan gummy worm. Simple and tasty!
You can't have a birthday party without a birthday cake! Mami also made that!
It was a super tasty lemon cake. Sweet and fruity!
We decorated it with some blue number candles and some edible butterfly decorations!
I'd bought the candles for my Mami's birthday party earlier this year, and I'd managed to find some vegan butterflies for that cake that added a touch of color and a nice little detail!
And while the cupcakes and cake were Mami's projects, I had one of my own...cake pops!
Ariana is a big fan of cake pops, so I decided to make her some for her birthday!
I though that making them look like bees would be fitting in an enchanted forest. I looked for a cake pop display to hold them, but I couldn't find any that I liked. They were all either too expensive or made out of cheap plastic. Either way, they wouldn't be a good fit with the theme.
So, I decided to make one of my own. With some cardboard, papier mache, and paint, I made a beehive shaped cake pop stand of my own! I was surprised that it actually worked!
And I think that the bees looked cute too!
I decorated the cake pops with some vegan white chocolate dyed yellow, with a simple black icing for stripes, and Dandies mini marshmallows for wings!
And with everything ready to go, it was time for Ariana to see what we'd prepared and enjoy her party!
After a few treats, she decided to open her presents!
There was this dragon that I particularly liked, and I think that she did too! Not only was it a gift, but a nice decoration too!
We spent the rest of the day watching movies and enjoying spending some time together! Then for dinner Mami made pizza which was DELICIOUS! Finally, we sung Happy Birthday and enjoyed some cake!
